Steel suppliers in the UAE range from mill agents and large stockholders in Jebel Ali and Mussafah to traders and cutting yards in Al Quoz, Ras Al Khor and Sharjah Industrial Area. Fabricators, contractors and workshops buy sections, plates, sheets, pipes and rebar from them, usually by phone, and prices move with the global steel market — so a quote is often held for days, not weeks.
Know what kind of supplier you are calling
- Stockholders: hold a wide range in their yard, deliver quickly, and cut to length. The price includes that convenience.
- Mill agents and importers: better prices on large quantities of one size, with a lead time while it is rolled or shipped.
- Traders: buy from both and sell on; useful for mixed orders and small quantities.
- Rebar suppliers: often a separate trade, quoting cut-and-bent reinforcement to a bar bending schedule.
The lines that decide a steel price
- Grade and standard: for example S275 or S355 to EN 10025, or ASTM A36. A quote without a grade is not a quote for structural use.
- Size and length: section dimensions and thickness, and stock lengths (often 6 m or 12 m) or cut to size.
- Weight basis: theoretical weight from the size tables, or actual weighbridge weight. Rolling tolerances mean the two differ, so ask every supplier for the same basis.
- Mill test certificates: EN 10204 type 3.1 certificates trace the steel to its heat; consultants on most projects will ask for them.
- Cutting, drilling and painting: included, charged per cut, or not offered.
- Delivery: to site or ex-yard, and whether a crane truck is included for unloading.
A cheaper price per tonne on a heavier section is not a cheaper job.
Comparing price per tonne fairly
Put every quote on the same basis before comparing: same grade, same weight basis, delivered, excluding VAT, with cutting either included in all or added to all. Then compare the total for your order, not the rate. A supplier quoting per piece can be converted using the section's weight per metre from the size tables. And check stock: a lower rate on a mill order that arrives after your fabrication slot is no saving.
What to send steel suppliers
Send the same message to every supplier: item and size, grade and standard, quantity in tonnes or pieces, lengths or cutting list, whether you need mill certificates, the delivery site and date, and the price basis you want. A filled-in version is example 1 in our RFQ examples.
Quick answers
How long is a steel quote valid? Often only a few days, because steel prices move. Ask for the validity in writing and compare quotes collected on the same day.
Is it worth importing steel directly? For large quantities of one section, sometimes — but freight, the 5% customs duty on most goods, VAT and clearing all come on top, and there is no stock to fall back on. UAE import duty and VAT shows how to work out the landed cost.
Calling steel suppliers in one go
Steel prices move while you are still ringing round. Our AI procurement platform calls several steel suppliers at the same time and asks each the same questions — grade, price per tonne, stock, cutting and delivery — so the quotes are collected within minutes of each other.
