The UAE has a deep packaging market: converters that print and cut cartons, flexible packaging manufacturers for pouches and film, label printers, and traders who stock plain boxes, tape, stretch film and food containers by the pallet. Most of it is concentrated in the industrial areas of Sharjah and Ajman and in Dubai's industrial districts such as Al Qusais, Ras Al Khor, Dubai Investments Park and Jebel Ali.
Know which kind of supplier you need
- Stockists and traders: plain cartons, tape, stretch film, bubble wrap, standard food containers. Fast, from stock, small quantities fine.
- Carton manufacturers: printed or custom-size corrugated boxes. Better price at volume, with a minimum order and a lead time.
- Flexible packaging converters: printed pouches, sachets and roll film. Usually a one-off printing cylinder or plate cost, then a per-unit price.
- Label and sticker printers: short runs, quick turnaround, often the easiest place to start for a small brand.
What to put in a packaging RFQ
Packaging prices hang on details buyers often leave out. Give every supplier the same list:
- Internal dimensions (length × width × height) and what goes inside, with its weight.
- Board or material: for cartons, single wall (3-ply) or double wall (5-ply); for pouches, the layers and thickness if you know them, or the product and shelf life if you do not.
- Printing: plain, one colour, or full colour, and on how many sides. Send the artwork or a photo.
- Quantity, and whether you will reorder. Printed packaging gets much cheaper per unit as quantity rises.
- Food contact: say so if the packaging touches food, and ask for the supplier's food-grade documentation.
- Delivery area and date needed.
Two carton quotes are only comparable when they are for the same board, the same print and the same quantity.
Why printed packaging quotes vary so much
Three things move the price. Set-up costs — printing plates, cylinders and cutting dies — are paid once, so on a small order they dominate and on a large one they disappear; ask suppliers to show them separately so you can compare the unit price. Paper and resin prices move, so quotes are often valid for a short time. And minimum orders differ: one converter's minimum may be another's small job. Ask every supplier what the price would be at two quantities, such as 2,000 and 10,000, and the differences become clear.
Lead times
Stock items from a trader can often be delivered within days. Printed cartons and printed flexible packaging take longer because they are made to order, typically a few weeks, and more around busy seasons like Ramadan. Ask for the lead time from artwork approval, not from order, because proofs take time too.
Quick answers
Is it cheaper to import packaging from China? Sometimes, for large printed runs. For small or urgent orders, local suppliers usually win once freight, duty and lead time are counted. How to work out the landed cost.
Can I get a sample first? Most manufacturers will make a blank or digitally printed sample, sometimes for a fee that is credited against the order.
